Our Garden Table...
We have ALWAYS wanted to have a space where we could host dinners, you know, the ones where family and guests can just come and relax. Where we can get away from it all for a while and not have to worry about what happened yesterday or what may happen tomorrow. So, we decided to build a space that would help accomplish that and share what we're learning along the way with you.
For the last couple of years, we have been purposely expanding our garden so that it would provide a feeling of sanctuary, a place of respite, a place where we could all enjoy a great dining experience without being too close to the outdoor kitchen. The great thing about our setup is that if we find we're too far away from the kitchen, we can adjust to make things easier.
In doing so, we found that when it comes to creating a great outdoor dining experience, having the right furniture is key. We decided to build a huge garden table that would hopefully make all the difference in providing a comfortable and enjoyable space for our guests to dine and relax.

How to Choose the Perfect Garden Table
When selecting a garden table for outdoor dining, we had to take into consideration the material, size, and design. We opted for durable materials that can withstand the elements, like these 2" thick repurposed planks that were sitting in a pile next to a rancher's barn and were not being used. We needed to choose a size that fit our space and the number of guests we thought we would typically host. Due to the stock we had to work with, this table turned out to be 12' 6" in length and 36" wide. We purposely built it with a minimum of base materials as I hate hitting my knees on a table leg,..you know the feeling, the one that is comparable to hitting the "funny bone" in your arm and makes you say things that aren't appropriate at the dinner table...
Creating an Outdoor Dining Experience
We arranged our garden table in a central location with easy access to the kitchen or grill. One can just see the outdoor kitchen through the garden gate. We're going to try really long benches for a while to see how they work out for seating..providing that one person doesn't go over backwards when standing up and starting a chain reaction where everyone topples over at the same time. But. then again, it is all about the experience... And, of course, we'll work with the lighting to create a welcoming atmosphere.
